South Carolina math educators met at the Columbia Convention Center October
22-23, 2009. During the two day conference, more than two hundred workshops,

Dr. Jim Rex, South Carolina Superintendent of Education, addressed the organization’s members at the business meeting on Thursday evening. He discussed the improvements our state has made with on-time graduation rates as well as the need for continued improvement in this and other areas of South Carolina education. Dr. Rex recognized the contributions of math educators in the continuing development of mathematical standards for our state.
The “Outstanding Contribution to Mathematics Education” award recognizes individuals who have through their time, energy, expertise, and commitment, made substantial contributions to the advancement of mathematics education in their schools, communities, state, and nation. This honor was presented to Dr. Celia Adair, USC-Upstate (retired).
The SCCTM Scholarship Program provides financial assistance of $1,500 to deserving preservice teachers who express their intention to specialize in the teaching of mathematics. This year SCCTM awarded two scholarships: Caitlin O’Neill, a senior at Clemson University and Katherine Thompson, a senior at Winthrop University.
The Educator's Scholarship was established in memory of deceased SCCTM members and provides financial assistance of $1,500 annually to a teacher pursuing an advanced degree in mathematics or mathematics education. In 2009 this scholarship was awarded to Babasola Ogunfanya, Burke High School in Charleston.
Grant funds support members desiring to implement projects in
mathematics-related areas. This year a teacher grant was awarded to Heather
Studer, Mid-Carolina Middle School, Newberry County, for her proposal “Boys, Girls, Books, and Math.”
