Awards

The South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics has two awards to recognize the efforts of individuals that have produced significant and substantial effects on the teaching and learning of mathematics in South Carolina - the Outstanding Contributions to Mathematics Education Award and the Richard W. Riley Award. Both awards celebrate the time, energy, expertise, and commitment expended by these individuals that have improved mathematics education in our state. Their efforts have made positive differences for mathematics educators as well as impacted the learning of mathematics for students across the state. These awards recognize contributions in curriculum, instruction and/or assessment of mathematics.

Do you know someone that you feel deserves to be honored in this way? Nominate him/her for these awards! Nominations should be received by July 15.

Grants

The first SCCTM grants were awarded during the summer prior to the 1991–92 school year. From the beginning, the SCCTM Executive Board has determined the maximum number of grants that could be awarded each year, generally between two and four. Our newly revised Constitution allows for the selection of up to five winners each year so five grant awards will be the maximum number awarded for 1999–2000. Each grant award is funded at the level requested by the writer up to a maximum of $1,500. Betty McDaniel and Lane Peeler developed the guidelines for the grant awards in 1990 at the request of the SCCTM President, Mary Elmore, and that Executive Board. The grants committee is composed of a chair, selected yearly by the SCCTM president, and the five SCCTM vice-presidents.

From 1991 to 2000, 29 grants were funded for a total of about $26,000. There have been 17 elementary, one elementary/middle, seven middle, and four high school grants funded during these eight years. Schools in 21 different districts had received these SCCTM grants.
